Most of the time it's as simple as doing a couple circles (truck's needed 2 circles, do it in a parking lot or something) periodically. My phone has a figure-8 process to recal the direction.
GPS track is still more accurate than an electronic sensor. Start moving, get a couple track points, and derive a heading from that.
