It's still easy to get hired in shit jobs like retail/restaurants, but it is getting exponentially harder to get hired into 'real' professional career fields (especially government) out of college. Everyone has at least a bachelor's degree (many have a masters now too), has been doing internships since freshman year and is constantly networking their ass off on linkedin/etc.
The meme back office GS-8 position I got hired for had over 350 applications (that's the cut off where the system stops accepting new applicants). The days of just coasting through life and winding up in some cushy white collar job are basically over for 99% of the population in this late stage empire. I have friends who went to the same school, took the same classes, but fucked off for the summers "finding themselves" who are still working at Starbucks/bar tending/waitressing 5 years later. Don't underestimate how competitive life is now.
