You would be amazed at the cleanup efforts on some of the higher elevation streams in WV. Take Shavers Fork, it was pretty bad for a while, now there's limestone treatment and they stock it with trout and they do well.
I drank from Shavers Fork, I know ur not supposed to, I bought a water filter since, but I didn't get sick.
I've also drank from a tributary of the Potomac ~4000 ft as a kid.
Also Seneca Creek naturally is filled (not stocked in the upper part) with I think rainbow trout.
WV is not a monolith. There are definitely bad industrial parts still but the highlands are well preserved mostly now.
I went to the Allegheny National forest last month, Kinzua bridge, grand canyon overlook (otter view), cranberry vista quehanna wild area, logan falls in anf, assembly park trail, buncha nice ones, but WV is a bit nicer. Both nice!
