A cheap blanket thrown over anything expensive (laptop, camera, ipod/etc) goes a long ways to stopping smash-n-grabs.

$1k in gear isn't shit. Just sayin'. I've got that in one of my avalanche bags, empty... and about 5x that in one pelican case with camera gear in it. I wouldn't worry about it. If you are worried, go talk to your insurance agent.
