>>1164148>where else have you passed through in Europe?I went Austria > Hungary > Slovakia > Hungary > Romania > Hungary > Romania > Bulgaria > Serbia > Hungary > Croatia > Slovenia > Austria, 3642 kilometers in total.
>Did you feel in danger at any point?Guard dogs in Romania are insanely aggressive. There were days where I was chased by dogs a dozen times. It sucks but there's not much you can do but keep pedaling, and the adrenaline helps you pedal like a madman, fwiw. Strays are also very common but they tend to mind their own business unless they've got puppies or are scavenging food from trash cans.
I also felt mildly uneasy cycling through villages that were clearly gypsy ghettos. Apart from that everything was alright.
>I would like to get there while there is still snow, how early (or late) in the season would you recommend? Hard to tell, depends on the weather and the mountain range. The Transalpina, which goes across the Transylvanian Alps, usually opens in late May and closed in late October due to snow fall, give or take two weeks. That's about as good as a reference as it gets for when the season begins/ends. For the mountain ranges with a lower altitude, you can add about three in each direction.
I'd like to caution though that I've got no idea if and how well the trails are maintained in the winter. We're talking Romania here after all.
