When I go camping I use them, so I change the water every couple months at least. But as a test on my last trip, I grabbed one from my garage (I have 6 of these total, 4 in garage and 2 in car, for hurricane readiness). The water had been in it for 2 years. Tasted just fine. No plastic or staleness problems at all.
