If you're using a Carolina rig, leave a few inches of slack in the line. Some cats will let go of bait if they feel the weight on the line.
I like to use the 3 way rig and hooks no larger than 1/0 (and usually a little bit smaller than that, I have had my best luck with a #1). Fish a foot or 18 inches above your weight. That means the leader between the 3 way swivel and the sinker should be 12 to 20 inches long. Make that section of line lighter test than your main line, too. If anything hangs, it's most likely going to be the weight. Lighter line between swivel and weight lets you keep the swivel and hook if the weight becomes irretrievably hung.
