I always come back to the infamous monster from the Alien series. The concept of a monster which implants its young into a host for that young to burst free is horrific and shocking, and most of us would be inclined to believe it is relegated to fiction.
But in reality, parasitoids are all too real, and far more horrific than what is presented in the film. Usually, parasitoids lay their eggs into the host which then eats the host slowly from the inside out, beginning with the least essential organs first as to keep the host alive for as long as possible then eating the essential organs before bursting free upon consuming the entire animal. To make it more unsettling, they fly, have six legs, and glisten iridescent colors. So what eldritch being could this be? A jewel wasp. Really isn't as cool upon realizing it's just some wasp, but that's because we see wasps all the time. If you take a step back and see things from a new perspective, you realize how grand the world we inhabit truly is.
