the armillaria trees to run up the trunk and quickly lay claim to as much of the tasty wood as it can when the tree dies, but since it has to spread up from the bottom it usually only gets the first 10-15 feet of the tree and all above that the decay is dominated by fomitopsis that can just land anywhere by spores and start growing
