>>591629I believe the space created by the spike is for the tea ball hook (Pic related). Before invention of commercial tea bags, people used tea balls which would hold the loose tea leaves. They are still considered more traditional. By hooking the tea ball chain at the front, the tea ball was kept from banging around, because the front is now the bottom as the tea is poured.
