Most good down bags will come with a big storage sack, so you can store your bag as fluffed up as possible while at home.
You can really squash down when you need to. I can't quote anything saying how much damage it does do. And some people I know definetly go out of their way to avoid compressing their down. I'm comfortable really compressing it when I have to but always try to avoid having it compressed for >24 hours.
If you want to lighten your pac and there are good sales on then a decent down sleeping bag is a great investment imo
