>>931618I use wood bits for a single-speed Dremel (variable-speed models have overheating issues with high torque projects) to remove the bulk of the wood. You can see the main bit I use in the top left photo of
>>929411near the screwdriver handle. It works for poppers and the ones pictured. The bit in the Dremel in that photo is the one I use for the eyes. Then I use 60grit, 80grit, 150grit, 320 grit, and 1500grit sandpaper strips to touch it up. 1 lure takes about 5 mins to go from tree limb to lure blank. Most of the time is sanding. The wood I'm using now (maple) has been seasoned for about 3 years (old tool handle woods are nice hardwoods that are well seasoned you can use too). After that, several coats of baselayer then layers of paint built up to form whatever patterns I think I want. Then several clear coats. The clear coats I'm playing with, seeing which works best. Looks like I'll need to order some, "Devcon Two Ton Epoxy" for the clear coat, for best results.
They may look detailed, but it isn't difficult. Just use laying, meshes/screens, and stencils. I haven't even made any stencils yet. I don't have an airbrush yet, so I'm using cheap acrylic paint with a brush and spray paint. Sealing with a good clear coat is a must for those types of paints, they don't like getting wet.
