stupid boot question: why did 70s-style leather mountaineering boots like pic related or limmers, etc., never catch on in the fire/forestry world? Right now your two choices are logger boots like whites/danners/drews/etc. or Euro heavy hikers with the goretex taken out (lowa baffin, scarpa fuego). seems like pic related would be best of both worlds.
>muh superior (american, if limmer) leather oiled over 1000x
>no plastic shank to break or glued rubber rand to delaminate
>stiff, protective, supportive
>actual ankle support unlike logger boots
>no stupid-high heel, can actually walk comfortably
downsides:
>expensive, like loggers
>heavy, like loggers
>newfangled yuro bullshit, like the scarpas/lows that lots of guys use
and despite all that I think I heard of one guy on the old hotlist forum who used the sierra trading post alicos and a couple people who do volunteer trail work in them. what gives? I've never tried them myself so maybe there's something I'm missing.
