They work very well for us. Sometimes a bit slow to send a message, but overall great compact and rugged system.
We mostly send check-in messages to say that we're alive and well. It can be set to send messages to cell phones as text or to email. Location data included. Can be plotted right onto map.
Why do they suck?
If you needed to be located I suppose the GPS probably isn't super super precise, but I'm sure it is at least as good as 50m x 50m square, probably a lot better. That's plenty good in basically any situation (maybe not avalanche?!)
