a 68kg ewe needs aboot 1.5kg of feed per day. this is assuming basic, balanced nutrition of feed.
I would guess current flock (picrel) ranges in weight from 15kg to 50kg. the smallest of which is an intact ram lamb.
we were feeding pure Lucerne (alfalfa) hay and a processed complete pellet. we have switched to a 70/30 (i believe) bale of oat/lucerne, 2-4 hours daily free-range pasture and have stopped the pellet.
the intent is two-fold: save money and try to become feed independent.
Lucerne is high protein, with a high overall nutritional value. oat hay has oat berries, some grass/hay & lots of straw. the pasture is typical native grass blend with forb scattered aboot.
ultimately, I hope to transition them over to 100% pasture. the hold-up being perimeter fencing. in the mean time, we have several livestock pens with fencing & shelter. I shepherd them in person, on range, daily. until we have complete perimeter fence, I do 2 hours pasture on weekdays and 4 hours each weekend day.
main focus is eventual dairy production & lambing. second to that, meat/carcass & a tertiary focus on wool & hide.
