Some the canals along the East Coast and Great Lakes, together with the Chesapeake Bay, the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, and the Mississippi river, together comprise a water route called "The Great Loop", making it possible to circumnavigate the Eastern United States. It usually takes a fairly serious vessel (10-20 meters) to do this, because there are open sea crossings at points, on the Gulf of Mexico and the Chesapeake Bay, but I have heard of at least one hardy soul who completed the Great Loop in a 24' Boston Whaler.
