Don't mistake "intensive farming" as growing your corn closer together. There's so much info on farming and gardening now that anyone with an internet connection has no excuse to not be able to be nearly a subsistence farmer on a rather small amount of land, even if it were paved with concrete and asphalt.

Some of the info is good, but most of it is quite wasteful both in work-energy, land usage, and materials cycle. Also, horses, donkeys, and mules are actually pretty cheap where I live. Though, their upkeep costs about $100 per month per animal. Many people own one specifically to get farm tax status for their property. The savings they get from the write off makes up for the cost of the animal.
