I had a 4 door wrangler. More than enough room for 1 person. Aside from the bad factory computer I loved it. Actually went camping with 4 people and plenty of room for basic gear. Great off road capabilities from the factory and I used it plenty. Especially when it snowed or flooded.
That said, I'd probably go with a used small quad cab truck. Like the Colorado or Canyon. Option 2, get a van and convert it to a camper. The question is, what do you want you're vehicle to do? Most any 4WD is adequate unless you're doing serious off roading, like rock crawling, or certain types of trail. If you want serious off road capability, I would suggest the wrangler. Hands down the best factory off road vehicle.
