Its impossible to do anything like this in the UK, any affordable isolated rural land you buy (few acres for £10,000 per acre) will be denied planning permission for any sort of dwelling (bed & toilet). I can't stay in france legally unless I contribute to society and work (i.e. not just live off savings), marry someone, go as a student or prove I have a million pound to comfortably live on + pay for health insurance for a retirement visa.
I'm not sure what the punishment would be for me if I was to gather up tools and enough food for a week or so, go into the most isolated densest wood thats still left in this miserable country after the deforesting in WWII especially, chop down and notch a load of trees, build a cabin, set up some sort of permaculture in a clearing, move all my books and carry a wood burning stove & chimney through said forest and then set up the cabin and add to it after multiple trips. Once its completed occasionally going 30 miles on a mountain bike to the nearest aldi for canned food as I wouldn't be able to sustain myself at first.
