to avoid making a mess with any trash I use a stick to inject it deep into the topsoil so it's nobody's problem ever again. Primarily I do this with ciggy butts but it also works with snack wrappers, foil packets, etc. For things like beer cans or containers you can push over a stump and pack them into the hole, and then rock the stump back into place. Plastic and paper I hang onto until we setup camp and can just incinerate it all.
