>>881821 said is pretty correct. I'm finishing up my senior year as a geologist with a focus on isotope geochemistry and everyone is feeling pretty pessimistic right now. Hydrogeology will probably be the most stable in the future and petroleum will come back. It's a cycle. Another thing to account for is all of the old guys retiring. It's been one of the more unrecognized options and there will be a gap in demand.
You are also a scientist. It can be a challenging major if you don't put in the hard work.
Also, the most important part is it's a fun major if you want to challenge your self mentally and physically. Sure you can be sedentary and compute models all day, but you have an opportunity to learn how this world operates while in the middle of nowhere. I've seen lost civilizations and continent changing events.
I love what I do. This weekend we went to study deep marine turbidite systems in the Guadalupe Mountains.
