>>1348967If you stay out of touristy camp sites, you should be fine with bears. They’ll be more scared of you and the most you’ll see is their ass-end as they’re running away. The problem bears are the ones that have stolen/received hiker’s food and realize how easy and delicious it was. Then they’ll fuck your shit up, and won’t be scared of anything (whistles, loud noises, etc). Last weekend in the ADK high peaks, a couple bears came into one of the marked campsites, marched into a leanto as a guy was eating, and destroyed all his food and pack, and bluff-charged him. Don’t be that guy. Don’t eat where you’re planning on sleeping, hang your food and toiletries in a bear sack or a bear can (not required in the Whites), and eat before it gets dark. If you go into more remote places, your chances of a bad encounter with a bear will be less. And if you do see one, the worst thing to do is turn your back and run.
