A cool thing about the PA hunting license is you get year round access to state game land ranges, and you can bring one unlicensed guest. I go to range 203 all the time.
>GunsDepends on what you are shooting. I use a cheap double barrel sawn down to 20" with target load for squirrels. My typical engagement distance for squirrel is less than 20 feet. If you know somebody that grows fields of feed corn, ask if you can hunt there. In fall/winter the squirrels will come out of the woods to drag cobs back to their trees to eat. Look for where there are more corn cobs and corn scraps out of place in the woods around the bases of trees.
I shoot woodchucks out my bedroom window with a suppressed SBRd AR15 with CMMG 22lr conversion bolt and subsonics. Engagement distance for me is less than 50 feet. Not really "hunting", more like pest control, but I do eat the groundhog that I shoot
30-30 is pretty standard for deer here. This was my first year hunting deer and i didnt get anything but was with people who did. Set up in a stand an hour before sunrise and a couple hours before sunset. If you are with a bunch of other guys you can "drive" the deer in the daytime into eachother. Have one group form a horizontal line each 200+ feet apart and have them walk at least a half mile towards another line of shooters. Wear orange, obviously. Use terrain to your advantage, like pushing deer into a corner like the bends in a river/creek, use the high ground, etc. Also look for where bucks grind their antlers on trees.
