I run an eTrex 22x almost exclusively for datalogging.
Keeping my phone on and recording with caltopo saps the battery, especially in the cold.
I'll pretrip with CalTopo, have it shit out a handful of key tracks/waypoints and squirt that into my eTrex. But i'm not usually "actively" navigating with the etrex.
Real nice to have waypoints with gate codes right on the GPS; as I ride up to a gate the code is right there. And when you get offroad or onto some of the private property/ranches/old FS roads that aren't well mapped, having a track for "the way" is nice to have. Doublecheck that i'm actually going the right direction and not on a spur road.
