The waterfall is from a stream that cuts through a slope which leads off a cliff that is very close to / facing a huge glacier. Based on where he was found, I am guessing that that he might have slipped and tumbled sideways down the slope and fallen into the creek, and then was swept down the creek where he was fatally thrown off the waterfall to the rocks below. The waterfall's edge was said to be in view of the main trail, but no one could see his body unless they were literally standing on the glacier. The ice has been thawing and it often rains there, so it may have been muddy and the stream's current may have been quite strong.
Maybe he saw the glacier calving on its side from the path and he went off-trail a little bit to get a closer look (since it sounds like there were no trees and you could easily find the path again), but he slipped and tumbled off the hill. This is just my speculation though. The authorities have not really said anything yet other than when, where and how they found him.
