Most people contribute nothing to society, they perpetuate the cogs without actually changing anything.
To contribute to society you have to author a work that inspires a huge number of people, invent something that accelerates technology or makes living easier, and so on.
Most people will never contribute anything to society. So its a nonissue. Not helping the Cogs of society only becomes a problem with great numbers of people do it, such as during the soviet union.
