>wouldn't it be too much soil? Not really. Even if it were more than you needed, the worst case scenario is that you'd have a little more to weed, and that's not typically a problem with potting soil since most seeds will germinate and get tilled under, killing them and leaving it mostly sterile. Just keep in mind that the more soil they're in, the longer it will take for the roots to fill up the space, so it's going to feel like you should be watering, but you shouldn't. A start / cutting in a 5gal pot make take several weeks to a couple months before I'll feel it needs to be watered.
>>1774824>absolutely drench them until water comes out the bottomRoot rot isn't caused by the water itself, it's caused by anaerobic bacteria. If you're letting the soil dry between waterings, the bacteria dies back and the plants can fight off and outgrow the infections; it's when there's constant flooding that the bacterial colonies get out of control, that you'd start to notice symptoms. Realistically, even experienced growers will have minor root rot infections and never know, because the only symptom of a minor infection is just slightly delayed growth as the plant focuses more energy into healing and regrowing roots.
