This is part of the fixation and simplification fallacy that people get. "Oh this state has lots of pictures of desert it must be entirely a desert." I have family in the east and the Ozarks to and some parts over there can be comfy, especially if you like rural farming (which the west has to), but as a whole it doesn't compare to the western half of North America. They become a little less comfy when you look at water pollution maps and correlations with neurological disease and degradation, only a handful of states escape this however, but even rural areas in the east are fucked.
There is another fallacy with distance. Those patches of faded green on the satellite maps actually look like pic related on the ground. And with even denser areas in drainages (that are also usually mostly deciduous).
