The areas around Salt Creek are good for short walks (way too small to be called a hike) but where I've been going recently is the Palos Trail System which is in Cook County (The 20 miles or so of land to the North East without payday loans and liquor stores act as a barrier between it and Chicago despite them being in the same county).
The combined bike trails are fine but a lot less fun than the hiking trails where you can really be alone.
