dunno about copper canteens, but I have a 32oz bottle from Kosdeg that's been fairly beat up over the last 2 years. like throwing it a sailboat, scraping it around, etc. patina is excellent, tiny bit of verdigris, and no copper rot (bright green flakes). the cap is surprisingly about 99% leak-proof.
something worth mentioning about copper: it should be the first water you drink and you should drink it within a day. because copper ions will leach into the water. it's healthy like shellfish, but I wouldn't drink water that's been sitting in a copper bottle for a week.
otherwise yes, very clean, inherently antimicrobial, wash with mud, vinegar, or lemon juice. not my first choice for /out/ and I've since upgraded to a 48oz nalgene "silo" bottle, but I'd keep the nalgene packed up and the copper on hand for any /out/ing
