I do know there are a lot of pine trees in that area, but generally speaking (and I really mean generally speaking), the percentage of conifers is bigger in the north and there are proportionally more deciduous trees in the south as well. Either way, wood is generally (again, generally) easier to work with and split when it grows in a colder climate.
