>>19579 (cont. -- fucking 'field too long' errors...)> I live in WA and really want a postie bike. How much would I need to go from nothing to postie bike + licence.Posties aren't LA-category, so you'll need an actual bike licence.
Dunno much about the licensing in WA, but in NSW it's a decent deal (at least for small motorbikes, it sucks for bigger :) .. You do two half-day "Pre-L" course that costs ~$75, then you have to pass the RTA Road Rules exam (protip: NSW at least lets you download all 600 possible questions; study those, go over the ones you got wrong, repeat), then pay another ~$36 for the actual L Riders licence. You've now got 5 years to get a bike, and to progress to your Ps.
I think now L-riders have to do a minimum of 18?24? months... If you're just riding the Postie (their max speed is hardly more than 80 anyway..), it's not going to be too big a deal.
Another thing with the Pre-L course: you'll need to do it on a manually-geared motorcycle, rather than an automatic/scooter (again, at least in NSW).
And then, it's just a matter of practice, and getting accustomed to the road. It took me about a month of daily 30-minute practice rides to lose the nerves in local traffic, and another 2-3 months to LOSE ALL FEAR. Living near to the bush and doing some off-road practice helped me too (a Postie handles like a BMX a lot of the time..)
If you're up to it, you can actually (legally) take your L-plated bike on a ride around the entire country. :D
