Most hammocks are simply waterproof groundsheets with a bug net and can be set up on the ground without a problem. Pic related.

Tents are useless on rough terrain and steep slopes. Even a 10% gradient and you will wake up in a ball at the bottom of your tent soaking wet.
An average hammock setup weights about the same as a 1 person ultralight tent yet you have masses more room, you can cook under it without getting wet which isnt always possible in a small tent as you need it open to use a stove. You also have room to move about and hang your gear out to dry.
The main disadvantages of hammocks is you need a bit more insulation which makes them heavier in the winter and they suck compared to a sturdy tent in 50mph winds. The fact that the people who shit on hammocks never mention this means they know fuck all.
