Leather is cheap to patch with, often free. If you DIY your clothes it's the next logical step for you. People that give me money hardly ever comment on my clothes. It's usually just local kids that think it's cool. Plenty of dirty kids are just punks that live outside. The patching/DIY shit came straight from that.
You're dirty because you live outside, sleep on the ground etc. not because you took a fucking dirt bath to impress normies. That's a serious leap of logic man. The coat of grime serves more purpose between dirty kids, a lot of the time you can read someone's dirt like a book, but it's not like there's some secret magical meaning behind being dirty. You live outside, you get dirty. No one wants to hang out at a laundromat every other day to clean their clothes for the perceived benefit of some dude who can't understand why things that are outside get dirty.
