From environments I've been in and my own experiences I just seriously consider a compass to be one of the most important pieces of kit you have, along with a map, but if you can get along without it then well done.
I'm totally with you though on the woods and mountains, barren landscapes can be pretty boring, but it depends on the time of year you go. Try when everything is blooming in spring, can be a really interesting different kind of landscape, just in a different way.
