I'm guessing you just happen to be close to the power distribution line.
As for taxes, ya- no way to avoid that unless you're illegal.
A guy in my county had electricity for decades at his family home.
He set up solar without telling the power company- his meter started going backwards and they got pissed and came out and disconnected him...
