If you had a different piece of property and could prove financial hardship to bring in electricity, you wouldn't have to get it.
I'm guessing you just happen to be close to the power distribution line.
As for taxes, ya- no way to avoid that unless you're illegal.
A guy in my county had electricity for decades at his family home.
He set up solar without telling the power company- his meter started going backwards and they got pissed and came out and disconnected him...
