Working and commuting isn't much of an option - I might be getting 200 acres 1.5 hours out of town from family. If I retire in 5 years (I can dream right?) i want to do something similar to you. I would almost definitely need bigger than 400sq ft though. How much did building your place itself cost? I've got to deal with those cold winters, too...
Building out there would probably be 150-200$/sq ft
