Alright, listen up arm chair experts. Clearly none of you realize that splitting wood while you're in the woods is pretty unnecessary-unless it's pouring. Even then you can find dry wood without splitting it. If you can't do this you need to get more education before worrying about bringing a hatchet or an axe or a batoning knife. I camped for years without knowing what batoning was, and without carrying an axe. If I had to choose a way to go- I'd say learn to gather firewood and be prepared to baton small ~4" pieces of wood just in case.
