What I tested to work surprisingly well are the pic related cheapest smooth semi-soft plastic corks with cork-lookalike print on them, plus the wire you mentioned.
I had few similar to pic related as a leftover from some fancy-packed spirits (but unlike those in the picture, the head was wooden), and I tested them on another batch of cider. Then I just bought more of these and thrown away those semi-opaque white plastic crap. Just be sure the corks you buy are one size up from the bottle diameter – the plastic is semi-soft for a reason.
