It depends what bears are in the area.
Black bears: it needs to be about 8' off the ground and at least 5' away from the tree (they climb)
Brown/Grizzly bears: at least 20' off the ground as close to the tree as you want (they dont climb although other shit might get to it)
Some people say 15' for brown bears but there are 13' long brown bears so...
