Modern Kukris are mainly fighting knives, (the same as Bowie knives in spite of what some will claim) increasing the size of the belly adds more mass to the blade for hacking motions and brings the contact area in front of your hand.
Having said that, they make excellent outdoor knives if you're some kind of retard who only wants to carry one blade.
Seriously though, there's a reason so many people are telling you to get smaller fixed blade and a hatchet... It works better.

The closest Euro equivalent is probably the Seax which fell out of favour about a thousand years ago.
Since then, europeans have favoured a smaller (usually around 4") knife with a seperate axe for heavier work.
