re: sport climbing, you'll be about 2 hours from smith rock, which is literally the epicenter of american sport climbing. it has everything from 5.2 to unfinished 5.15+ projects, so whatever you want you can find.

will you have a car? if you do you'll be about 2 1/2 hrs from smith rock, which is one of the major centers of american sport climbing, with everything from 5.4 to 5.14d. pic related from when i was there about 5 years ago.you'll also have great mountaineering opportunities in the cascades. plus other smaller regional crags.

the only 3 places in oregon most people in ca have heard of are portland, bend, and u of o (but they couldn't tell you what town it's in). avoid those three and you'll be fine based on your description the oregon cascades are exactly what you want. my kid's godfather and my best biking bro is a beaver, so i've heard plenty about how great it is. just haven't made it north yet. at least for biking; went climbing there with him and our wives a couple years back and it was cool. pic related.

these anons get it. my wife was an /in/ city girl when i first met her. a month into dating i took her car camping with every (non-electric) luxury possible. i gradually weaned her and now we go backpacking, rockclimbing, and she loves hiking more than i do. it's not necessarily a fast process, but worth it to do it right. pic related; she was about 3 months pregnant with our first kid here.
