There's a bridge I cross to get to the trail leading into my property, and there was regularly three to six groups that kayaked down the river every weekend. They tend to be pretty quiet, as I've never heard them on the river, except once. One of my dogs was posting up because of the noise a group of drunk kayakers were making when they got stuck on my sandbar. We went down to the water's edge, because I want the dog to get used to people on the river. As they came floating by we sat there and I said "What are you doin' in Old Gregg's waters?" They were pretty startled and probably didn't get the reference, but explained they were stuck on the sand bar and asked if the river was always this low. They complained about their beer boat bottoming out and other drunk ramblings. They sputtered out some questions about why I was there, did I live in the woods, etc. It was pretty awkward.
In hindsight I probably freaked them out. I was covered in dirt and sweat from working in the shack, sitting on the heavily wooded river bank with a dog. No signs of any other civilization for miles. It brings a chuckle to me every time I think about it.
