I like flint and steel (I still carry a Bic and a ferro rod cuz they're both very light)
but the flint and steel has pushed me to learn about geology for hard minerals in my area, metallurgy, for identifying striking metals, biology, for finding unconventional tinders particularity in inclement weather, and last astronomy, for figuring out how the fuck to get out of bad situation if I'm going to be there a few nights
being prepared means a lot of things, but mostly it means understanding your surroundings
a little mindfulness goes a long way
