IMO red wiggers are expensive and not good at converting waste to compost in california heat. Black solider fly larva are MUCH better, self-harvesting with some setups, and pupae are awesome protein/calc supplements for chickens. You might not be in an area away enough from the city to be allowed to keep chickens, but if you are, consider getting 1-3 chickens. They're cheap to keep and provide eggs and meat after a while. The easter chicken boom should provide cheap chicks. (and rabbits too if you have the heart to raise them)
But yeah the horse trough i an awesome deal. I'd get it but I don't have a truck (which sucks). I LOVE bees and am planting a lot of flowers this year too for them.
