Its extremely technical obviously and took me a long time to get my head around some of the concepts but I was going in with no experience using a compass so you should have a head start. I use a suunto and they're definitely what I recommend. Only run in with bears that couldnt be run off was on a trail so I cant really speak to that. Since that happened I simply dont go out without my 30-06.
