Depending on where you are in the northwest, the conditions of the river, and the time of year, catching salmon & steelhead is as easy as throwing a funny colored plastic bead you'd see on a necklace 4 feet down a pencil weight for at least 2 seconds or as hard as navigating a whole river and fishing everything from egg patterns to dry flies to plugs and having no luck because the fish aren't there. Catching fish in less than 6 /out/ings takes some pretty good luck if you are starting out, and the only way out from the perpetual skunk is to go out to your river as if you live there and learn as much as you can about fishing it and how it acts in all kinds of conditions so you'll know exactly what you're looking for every time you fish. And trust me, all the carp you've caught up till that point can go to hell compared to a dogged fighting chromer (especially steelhead) on the end of your line.
As for sturgeon, I bet you've gotten bitten at least 4 times if you were out 6 times. They have a super subtle bite sometimes the only hint they've inhaled your bait is a single super light twitch on your rod tip. You can choose to set only when they start running with your bait, but sometimes getting impatient and relying on your gut feeling once in while may pay off.
