From the beatnicks to today's "underground" there's always the same pattern:
First we have "the real kids": low class smart kids with kinda rough childhoods that realize their fate is to work some shitjob until they die. They decide to break out and start something completely different and liberating. Thus they live day to day with an abundant social life and whatever is they are doing becomes the new thing. Be it travelling the country beatnick style, living in goa, buming around the wold, train hopping, rave gangs, van living... They are the ones that break ground and start the thing. They are the least politically motivated ones, they live life by practice, not by theory.
Then rich kids wanting to live an adventure in poverty join them. Because the social interactions set by the real guys (parties, hang outs, friendships, sense of community, etc) are pretty intense, attractive and the new thing. They posse as poorfags to be accepted and even make elaborated stories about their fictitious poorfag backgrounds. The dress the poorest, talk the poorest and act the poorest. Meanwhile, daddy's visa platinum card is hidden in their back pocket just in case. They are usually the most politically motivated ones, giving long lectures on the evils of capitalism, pointing fingers at who doesn't belong, etc.
As times goes by rich kids outnumber real guys and the thing stops being a thing at all, it looses it's character and purpose, it becomes artificial.
Then somewhere, somewhat, a new generation of poor smart kids with a kinda rough childhood realize that their fate is to work some shitjob until they die. They can't go to the old thing because it's no longer functional, so they create a new thing and the circle starts again.
