i used to subscribe to it back in the late 90's. it was good back then. some good tips and guides. good reviews on gear, meals, excersizes and destinations and whatnot.

its worth a dollar a month easy. and unlike playboy or penthouse, it is always %100 ok to have on the coffee table

its not really difficult at all. i've done it a few times on short 2-3 day trips. its a lot of fun and depending on where you go, you often see other people from nearby campsites or pass them on the trail. most people i've met hiking were all pretty nice and will leave you to your self if you dont seek them out. i always felt safe on my own but in a way it was comforting to know there were others around off and on.
i would say the main thing to be careful with is your food, cooking, and latrine habits. i mean for safety and hygiene concerns.
like follow safe practices for food prep, cooking and storage. ie dont leave food laying around to attract bears to your tent site.
and follow recommended practices for latrine usage.
and the obvious dont be too reckless and break your ankle when your all alone. you could potentially be stuck, injured, immoblized and helpless and die of shock or exposure or infection or something
