Since this is posted in /out/ my criteria is as follows: discreet enough to be packed or hidden away in my pack. Yet ready for action when needed. This rules our AR and long rifles. Seriously, if you let bad guys see you carrying and parading 1000$ fancy tactical long gun, they will stalks you and wait till you're asleep and take it from you, and kill you.
If you are doing long distance trekking, weight Aldo becomes an issue. Your gun plus ammos weight add up quick. So again, your large caliber 308 Rem is out, too heavy. I mean, try carry that for 3 months in treacherous, rocky terrain and you'd wish for a lighter gun.
I used to carry a HR Parder 20ga, lightweight and short enough to conceal in my 75L pack.
Nowadays I pack a revolver, it fits in my windbreaker pocket, small and ready for action anytime. I sleep with it in my hammock.
Bringing your AR or 308 Rem in the hammock or sleeping bag is stupid and risky.
